Gum tissue forms a barrier to protect the roots of your teeth and bones of your jaw from the effects of chewing and biting as well as bacterial infection. There are several reasons that gums begin to shrink, leaving the roots exposed.
When the roots of teeth lose the protection of healthy gum tissue, you may experience sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. But worse is the bacteria that can now penetrate the roots and cause decay. Treatment of
receding gums will prevent tooth loss.
Treating Gum Recession With Gingival Grafting
During a gum grafting procedure, a small sample of tissue is taken from the area next to the recession or from the hard palate and attached to the area with a fine suture.
Local anesthesia makes the procedure pain-free. You may experience a little discomfort after the surgery, but the good news is that pain is short-lived and easily treated with over-the-counter medication. A soft diet and antibiotics may be recommended for a week or so while the gums are healing.
Keeping Your Gums Healthy
After a gum graft, it is more important than ever to practice good oral hygiene and follow your dentist's recommendations. To prevent future gum disease, proper brushing with fluoride toothpaste, daily flossing, and rinsing should be part of your at-home dental care routine. Remember, a healthy diet and regular dental and periodontal checkups will ensure healthy gums. Oral health improves your overall health. And your smile stays young and beautiful!
