What is Cardiovascular Disease?

Cardiovascular (heart) disease includes many conditions related to atherosclerosis — plaque buildup in artery walls that narrows the arteries and can trigger heart attacks or strokes.

Quick Facts

  • Each year, heart disease kills more Americans than cancer.
  • Cardiovascular disease is the #1 cause of death and disability in the US and most of Europe.
  • People with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease.
  • Forms include aneurysm, angina, atherosclerosis, stroke, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, heart attack, and peripheral vascular disease.

How is heart disease related to your mouth?

Oral bacteria entering the bloodstream can attach to fatty plaques in coronary arteries, contributing to clot formation. Inflammation from periodontal disease may also increase arterial plaque buildup and swelling. Researchers have found that people with periodontal disease are nearly twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease.

Treatment considerations

Cardiovascular disease is treatable and often reversible — even after a long history of disease. Because periodontal disease can exacerbate existing heart conditions, patients at risk for infective endocarditis may need antibiotics prior to dental procedures.
