Cardiovascular (heart) disease includes many conditions related to atherosclerosis — plaque buildup in artery walls that narrows the arteries and can trigger heart attacks or strokes.
Oral bacteria entering the bloodstream can attach to fatty plaques in coronary arteries, contributing to clot formation. Inflammation from periodontal disease may also increase arterial plaque buildup and swelling. Researchers have found that people with periodontal disease are nearly twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease.
Cardiovascular disease is treatable and often reversible — even after a long history of disease. Because periodontal disease can exacerbate existing heart conditions, patients at risk for infective endocarditis may need antibiotics prior to dental procedures. Dr. Tran will coordinate with your cardiologist as needed.
