What is Diabetes?

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the body has high blood glucose because insulin production is
inadequate, the body’s cells don’t respond properly to insulin, or both. There is more than one type of diabetes.

Quick Facts

  • Type I accounts for about 10% of cases and usually develops before age 40.
  • Type II accounts for about 90% of all diabetes cases.
  • People with obesity — especially belly fat — are at higher risk for Type II diabetes.

How is diabetes related to the mouth?

Gum disease is considered the 6th complication of diabetes. Uncontrolled Type II diabetics are at higher risk for gum disease, and severe periodontal disease can in turn raise blood sugar. Diabetics have a reduced ability to fight oral bacteria, are at higher risk for thrush (oral fungal infection), and may experience dry mouth from medications. Poorly controlled diabetes also leads to slow healing and a higher risk of infection after dental procedures.

A two-way street

The diabetes–gum disease relationship runs both directions: managing your oral health can help control blood sugar, and managing your blood sugar makes periodontal treatment more effective. At Tran’s Dental, we partner with your physician to support both.
