What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease. The immune system attacks the body’s own joint tissues, causing fluid buildup, pain, and systemic inflammation that can occur throughout the body.

Quick Facts

  • People with RA are 8 times more likely to develop gum disease than people without RA.
  • Among patients with both RA and gum disease, 18% have severe periodontitis and 32% have moderate periodontitis.
  • By comparison, only 10–15% of adults without RA have moderate to severe periodontal disease.

What is the link between gum disease and RA?

Both conditions share chronic inflammation as a central mechanism. In autoimmune diseases like RA, the immune system mistakenly triggers inflammation. Controlling oral inflammation through better dental care may help reduce the incidence and severity of RA. Studies have shown that when people with severe RA cleared up their gum disease, their pain and arthritic symptoms improved.

Tips for easier home dental care with RA

Use an electric toothbrush; add a tennis ball or bike handle to grip your brush better; try floss holders, picks, or threaders; use a fluoride mouthwash; consider toothpaste in a pump; avoid smoking; schedule shorter appointments later in the day; ask for a neck or leg pillow at the dentist.
