What is a Stroke?

An ischemic stroke (the most common type) happens when a blood vessel feeding the brain becomes blocked, usually by a blood clot. When blood supply is cut off, brain cells die and the ability to walk, talk, or function normally can be impaired.

Quick Facts

  • About 85% of strokes are ischemic strokes.
  • Stroke is a leading cause of long-term adult disability in the US.
  • Hypertension, smoking, diabetes, and obesity all raise stroke risk.
  • Untreated obstructive sleep apnea is also a significant risk factor.

How is stroke related to your mouth?

Studies point to a relationship between periodontal disease and stroke. In one study examining oral infection as a stroke risk factor, patients diagnosed with acute cerebrovascular ischemia were more likely to have an oral infection than control subjects.

How to minimize your risk

Control high blood pressure; lower cholesterol and saturated fat; quit tobacco; control diabetes; maintain a healthy weight; eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables; exercise regularly; drink alcohol in moderation; treat obstructive sleep apnea; avoid illicit drugs.
