What is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurological disease that causes irreversible loss of neurons and intellectual abilities, including memory and reasoning. It is also known as Senile Dementia of the Alzheimer Type (SDAT).

Quick Facts

  • Alzheimer’s results from a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors.
  • As brain cells die, Alzheimer’s causes significant brain shrinkage.
  • On average, people live 8 to 10 years after diagnosis (up to 20 years in some cases).

Common symptoms

Confusion, short-term memory disturbances, problems with attention and spatial orientation, personality changes, and language difficulties with unexplained mood swings.

How is Alzheimer’s related to your mouth?

Research suggests that exposure to inflammation early in life may quadruple one’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Chronic periodontal disease creates a sustained inflammatory burden that could be a contributing factor. If this link is confirmed, periodontal inflammation would join a short list of preventable risk factors for Alzheimer’s — making routine dental care even more important.
